The Keto Tracker I Built for My Journey
When I began my keto journey, I almost immediately started building a tool to help me navigate it. It didn't start as a full-featured app; it actually began as just a simple calculator I built for myself to quickly check if a food's macros were keto-friendly.
It grew from there, one feature at a time, right alongside my own progress, into the app I use today: Keto Tracker by Fat Enhanced. This evolving tool is the single biggest reason I was able to lose 10 kg of body fat and finally find my way into ketosis with ease.
A Simple View of Your Day
When you open the app, you see a simple dashboard for the current day. This is the main screen, showing your keto status at a glance. I made it easy to review your progress; you can just swipe to flip through previous days or use the calendar to jump to a specific date. My goal was to make checking in on my progress effortless.
A Food Library That Works The Way I Do
When it came to food logging, I envisioned a system that was both practical and accurate. This is why you won't find features like AI logging from a photo; personally, I don't trust an algorithm to guess my macros, as a picture can't know the actual ingredients or how a meal was prepared. I'd rather spend a moment logging my food properly than get a fast but likely incorrect result.
With that in mind, I designed the app around creating your own personal food templates. I wanted the ability to log "a fist of macadamias" or "three slices of the cheese in my fridge." For a more complex meal, my workflow is simple: the first time, I might put the plate on the scale, add the salad, zero the scale, add the oil, zero it again, add my protein, and finally the sauce. After doing that once, the specific portions of protein, oil, and sauce are saved as new templates. The next time I eat that meal, logging it is just three quick taps in the app—no scale required.
To make it even easier, as you're adding items, the screen shows you the macro split in percentages. I found this essential because guessing the fat-to-protein ratio can be tricky, and seeing it visually makes all the difference. When I buy a new cheese, I just update my template once. It's a practical system that reflects how I actually eat, and over time, the app has learned my habits and suggests my common meals to make logging even faster.
My advice is to keep it simple, especially when you start. You'll likely find you don't eat a huge variety of foods, so building your core templates is quick. I also simplify the process by not logging everything down to the last gram. For me, the carbs in leafy greens or a few slices of tomato are negligible, so I just skip logging them. It's about finding what's practical and sustainable for you.
A Tool Designed for Observation
Beyond food, I wanted to track the things that gave me real insight. This app is my personal toolbox, and I wanted to share it with you. You can use as much or as little of it as you find helpful.
I set my own carb and calorie goals because I know what my body responds to. I log my blood sugar and ketones, but made sure to add flags for "fasted" or "post-workout" because context is everything. I even added a spot for waist circumference—a metric a friend and I have been sending each other for years. The liquid tracking is also designed for mindfulness; there are no prescribed goals, just a simple log to help you notice how you feel based on your intake of water, electrolytes, and caffeine.
Your Data Belongs to You, Not Me
It was incredibly important to me that your data would never be trapped. I don't want your personal information, so there are no cloud accounts to sign up for. The app has a simple export function that saves your entire history in a readable format. You can back it up to your own cloud service, move it to another phone, or do whatever you want with it. It's your information, and I believe it should always belong to you.
A Final Thought: The Challenge is Part of the Fun
I've found that for me, tracking has become a kind of game—a satisfying challenge to log my day and stay within the rules I've set for myself. It's a big part of what makes it enjoyable and effective.
But even with that in mind, my most important piece of advice is this: don't let it become a source of stress. Some days, dinner will be too complex to log, or you'll just forget. That's fine. Just pick it up again tomorrow. I built this tool to be a source of motivation, not guilt. Consistency is far more important than perfection.
What started as a simple calculator has grown into the most used app on my phone, and frankly, I'm very proud of how it turned out. This is the tool that changed my journey, and I truly hope it can be as helpful for you as it has been for me.
Once it's released to the public, if you decide to give it a try, I would be grateful for any feedback you could leave in the App Store or Google Play. Your thoughts will help it continue to evolve.
For now, the app is being tested with a small group of friends. I’ll post updates about the release here on the site, but if you have any questions or just want to be notified directly when the app drops, please feel free to reach out to me at hey@fatenhanced.com.
